Contra Costa Church of Religious Science
The Contra Costa Church of Religious Science is a community of like-minded individuals who know that it is done unto us as we believe. We believe that our consciousness creates our experience and that
our intentions show up in the outer world as form.
Members come from many different faiths to enjoy the Church's
practical teaching of the Science of Mind®, the spiritual and philosophical foundation of the church's message. Our spiritual beliefs are based on the teachings of Ernest
Holmes and are summed up in his commentary 'What We Believe'.
Our Ministers are available for spiritual counseling, prayer treatment, weddings, commitment ceremonies, memorials, christenings, and house blessings. Our Practitioners are available to support healing and personal growth with affirmative prayer. We offer classes in The Science of Mind® and related New Thought teachings. 'Infinite Ideas', our New Thought bookstore, provides our community with contemporary and classic reading material, along with inspirational tapes and videos.
Contra Costa Church of Religious Science is in the new thought tradition, stemming from Ralph Waldo Emerson among others. Religious Science was founded by Ernest Holmes. We are affiliated with Religious Science International.
Our Positive Approach to Life
We know God as a presence that is everywhere, not a person.
We consider heaven to be a state of mind, not a place.
We believe that everyone's life is eternal and forever expanding.
We call God by different names, such as Spirit, Mind or First Cause, to eliminate gender
prejudice associated with God The Father, and to see more clearly that there is
One life back of everything that lives.
We practice, teach and use scientific, affirmative prayer that we call Spiritual
Mind Treatment. This form of prayer heals, improves, and expands our experience of life.
We identify with God Power as loving and perfect intelligence from which
all creation is produced.
We know that the goodness of God is within, guiding and directing us
with compassion, love, and peace.
We believe evil is ignorance and that people act in an evil manner
through their ignorance of the Divine Principles of Life. We do not believe
evil to be inherent in anything, or that it is an opposing power to God.
We teach from the lives and writings of great spiritual thinkers/leaders, such as
Jesus, Moses, Emerson, Thoreau, Plato, Socrates, Aristotle, Buddha, Gandhi,
Sri Aurobindo, Jung, James and more in the study of Spirit's unlimited power for good.
We were founded by Dr. Ernest Holmes in the 1920's. Holmes was a student and
spiritual teacher who understood the Divinity of how life works. He had a particular
interest in the teachings of Jesus and Eastern Religions. Holmes is the author of our
textbook, The Science of Mind.
We see similarities in our teaching with distinguished contemporary writers such as
Deepak Chopra, Joseph Campbell, Jean Huston, Matthew Fox, Wayne Dyer,
Maya Angelou, Oprah Winfrey, and many others.
We offer a Spiritual New Thought approach to life, not new age spiritualism. We
emphasize and believe God to be the Universal Power for good that is within and
around all creation. We can use this Power to live peaceful, productive and creative
lives. We believe that all life is sacred, eternal and divinely guided.
How will I fit in?
Members and friends come from all walks of life. We attract creative, vibrant, intelligent people to our teaching. Many of our members are involved in creative careers and others are exploring their retirement years.
Most importantly, in our community, you'll find a spiritual home where you can learn and grow. You'll find people to support you through the hard times and celebrate with you in the good times. The company of others on the spiritual journey is a great blessing, and you're invited to take part in our regular weekly services, ongoing classes, special events, and social gatherings.
